tesa CONTINUES STRIDES TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLINESS
CHARLOTTE, NC – November 18, 2005 – Today, company officials of tesa tape, inc., a global leader in the manufacture and supply of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, released information regarding its latest investment in technologies to meet and exceed environmental standards at its Michigan manufacturing facility. This new initiative comes on the heels of the company’s recent certification to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 14001:2004 requirements, an internationally recognized standard for EMS (Environmental Management Systems).
In late 2002, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) released national emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants. These new standards targeted major producers of hazardous air pollutants, including facilities that coat paper and other web substrates. Requirements of the standards include applying MACT (Maximum Achievable Control Technology) at said facilities and reducing total organic emissions by 95% at existing affected sources.
In response to the EPA emissions standards, and as committed stewards of the environment, management at tesa tape, inc. approved the installation of an emissions capturing system on its adhesive coating and mixing stations at its Sparta manufacturing plant, along with an RTO (regenerative thermal oxidizer) from Alstom. Personnel from the tesa Operations Department worked hand-in-hand with the MDEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) and consultants from FTC&H (Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber, Inc.) to obtain a permit to install the new equipment.
With new system in place, air flow at the tesa facility now navigates into coating and mixing areas, captures all volatile organic and hazardous air pollutant emissions, including fugitive emissions, and routes them through the oxidizer to be incinerated. Initial system tests produced 99.6% emission destruction levels! Moreover, tesa tape, inc.’s Sparta facility has been reclassified from a “major” to a “synthetic minor” volatile organic / hazardous air pollutant source.
